- Journal Entry

Little is known of the hunter known as Elric von Wulfrich. Even when it comes to witness testimonies and accounts, Elric’s true identity is one shrouded in questions and mystery. But in order to know him, one must go back to when he first appeared.

Elric was said to have first appeared near the town of Lorn, a small seaside hamlet located in the continent of Solitas. It was a simple settlement, facing the sea with protected from behind by natural mountain barriers referred to as the Silver Spires. A solitary settlement, Lorn was its own small haven in the continent of Solitas, able to make do without much help from the kingdom of Atlas. And it was during a winter storm that Elric was spotted by the inhabitants of Lorn.

Before he could proceed further into Lorn, he was stopped by the wary leader of Leader. But upon confrontation, the leader’s wariness was replaced by concerned kindness as she saw that the stranger was a young child, no older than seven years of age. The leader’s attention was piqued when she noticed the small bundle that Elric embraced protectively to his chest. A weak sob was heard from the bundle and it was then that the leader realized that the young boy was cradling an infant. It was at that moment that the woman’s heart was truly moved by compassion as she took the two children into her own home.

Many days would pass before Elric’s trust was won over by the town leader. But even when he spoke, there was still a sense of secrecy. Elric said that they were orphans, whose parents succumbed to a tragic death, leaving him to look after and care for his sister.  Desperation drove him to seek shelter from somewhere and hat had led him to Lorn. With no known relative and the fact that they were both orphans, the leader decided to adopt the two children as her own.

Years would pass by as the young Elric and his sister grew and became accepted members of Lorn. Elric proved to be a reliable boy, able to help out with tasks and errands around the town while his sister grew to be the little bright ray of sunshine in Lorn’s cold backdrop. They grew to be valued family by everyone in Lorn. And for a time, the two orphans knew peace and happiness. Unfortunately, tragedy would rear its ugly head once more.

It was during a rather harsh winter that the town of Lorn fell to a horrific event that would forever scar it. A number of hunters from the town had ventured out, armed and accompanied by their dogs and sleds into the Silver Spires in search for wild game to prepare and store for the rapidly approaching winter. Days passed by and worry grew as the hunters failed to appear. It was dusk when someone from the hunting party had finally appeared, drenched in blood. As he entered Lorn, he kept screaming that something was coming and soon enough, the thing that followed violently attacked Lorn. It was a massive creature that towered over the townspeople. Clad in white fur and sporting two large horns, it started to tear into Lorn. Screams and wails of overpowered the winter winds. The remaining hunters of Lorn fought back to kill the beast but were only able to drive it back, howling and roaring back into the Silver Spires. But though they forced it back, the damage had been done and casualties were many. Among those unfortunate souls that fell, none could be more heart   rending than the frail and damaged body of a small girl that Elric held in his shaking arms.

No words were spoken as the remainder of Lorn silently gathered and lamented the loss of their town. The remainder of the night was spent in gathering the fallen.

When dawn finally broke, Elric was nowhere to be found, along with the hunting bow that Lorn’s leader had always kept hung above the fireplace in her home. She knew all too well where the young boy had gone. A message for help was sent to Atlas, but response was painfully slow as winter’s fury grew, making travel and access nearly impossible. The winter winds continued on relentlessly for a month and as each days passed by, hope for the young boy seemed lost.

When spring drew nearer and the winter has finally died down, the help from Atlas finally arrived. But it is not their arrival that shocked and awed the settlement of Lorn. The inhabitants of Lorn as well as the people from Atlas could only gaze at a scene that seemed to be directly from a fairy tale. What they saw was a hunter’s sled being pulled by a pack of wolves, and riding the sled was none other than the lost boy who had vanished a month ago. With his hand raised high, the town leader could do nothing but gaze in wonder at the two large horns that the young boy held.

Elric had brought back the beast’s horns as well as the remains of the ill-fated hunters that fell first to the beast. However, it was the damage on the boy that held the attention of everyone who could see him. The right side of his face was mangled with scars and his right eye was blinded. His entire left arm was gone as well, but what truly spoke volumes was the left eye of Elric. Whatever had happened to him during the month of his absence, the marks of it could be seen in his tired and distant eye. Gone was the young boy, and in its place stood a hunter. And this hunt was merely the beginning.

Time would pass and Elric would earn many monikers during his career as a hunter. To the people of Lorn, he would be called Elric von Wulfrich considering that his true name was never known.  To others that know of his feats, he is called “The Scarred Paragon”. But as for him, he simply calls himself Elric.

Stories and accounts of Elric’s endeavors are plenty when you look in the right places. But as for now, this story should be enough to tell you of his beginnings. As for what happens after, well, that is a story for another time.
